IB PYP

In 2014, Briargrove became an authorized International Baccalaureate school in the Primary Years Programme (PYP).  Our goal is for our students to be immersed in a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners. The PYP is a framework for all of our elementary instruction.  Instruction revolves around 6 Transdisciplinary Themes:

  • Who We Are
  • Where We Are in Place & Time
  • How We Express Ourselves
  • How the World Works
  • How We Organize Ourselves
  • Sharing the Planet

Students work across discipline areas to create conceptual understanding and knowledge. Throughout the Primary Years Program, a student is an agent for their own and others’ learning through the concept of learner agency. Learner agency is connected to self-efficacy and beliefs students have about their ability to progress in their learning.

The inquiry process responds to student voice, choice and ownership to build capacity, so that inquiry is purposeful and authentic, drawing on the questions and wonderings of learners and connecting their personal experiences to local and global opportunities and challenges.
