School History

Briargrove Elementary School, spent its first semester of life in January 1958, housed on the south side of the Grady Elementary School, now known as Tangelwood Middle School. The faculty and staff of Grady Elementary were generous in sharing their facilities with Briargrove teachers and staff. Ms. Mattie Neel was the first principal of Briargrove and served the school community in this capacity until her retirement in 1971.  Briargrove eventually left the campus of Grady and moved into its own establishment in September 1958. Briargrove is nestled in the heart of Houston, Texas and is now a school home to over 800 students.

Briargrove welcomes all students seeking a public education from Kindergarten to Fifth grade. We offer classrooms with educators who are highly motivated and trained to meet the diverse learning needs of all of our students. At Briargrove, we believe in developing students holistically. We strive to nurture students intellectually, emotionally, and socially through the HISD curriculum and campus-wide programs and policies.

The Briargrove student body is epitpome of diversity. To reflect this diversity, in 2014 Briargrove became an International Baccalaureate World School. Briargrove Elementary was authorized as an IB World School for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme for Primary Years in March 2015. As an IB World School, we join the ranks of over 4,000 schools world-wide. The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
